Listening to farmers, designing for impact

Listening to Farmers, Designing for Impact: Insights from our upcoming Gender & AI Livelihoods (GAIL) Program
Last week, our team spent time with a number of poultry farmer groups, listening, observing, and trying to understand what really holds them back. One issue overshadowed everything else: young birds becoming weak, falling sick, and farmers struggling to identify what’s going wrong.
It wasn’t just one farmer. It was almost every group we met.
Beyond diseases, they spoke about markets, feed quality, fluctuating prices, and the uncertainty of who will buy their birds when they’re ready. It reminded us that poultry success isn’t only about keeping birds healthy; it’s about connecting farmers to reliable inputs, credible suppliers, fair buyers, and predictable market pathways. Any solution we build must strengthen the entire chain, not just one part of it.
For years, these challenges have been treated as technical failures. But at the core, they are information failures, moments where farmers need clarity, simple solutions, contextual guidance, and support in the moment, not complexity.
As we prepare to roll out our GenAI-enabled solution in partnership with Shortlist Futures under the Gender & AI Livelihoods (GAIL) program, these insights matter deeply. Because the future of poultry health in rural communities won’t be built through one intervention, it will be built through a partnership of strengths.
Where AI steps in is by giving farmers instant clarity, spotting patterns they can’t see, simplifying complex decisions, and offering personalized coaching exactly when birds start showing early signs of stress.
Where our agripreneurs step in is by bringing what technology cannot: presence, trust, context, and the gentle, human translation of advice into practical action inside the coop.
And the real magic happens when the two work together, when intelligence meets empathy, when insight meets action, and when farmers feel supported both digitally and physically. That’s when uncertainty becomes confidence and small interventions prevent big losses.
Kuza One (Kuza Biashara)’s blend of AI + agripreneurs is not about fancy tools. It’s about making sure farmers never feel alone when their birds are at risk. As we co-design this next phase with Shortlist Futures on the GAIL program, the goal is simple and ambitious: to build a support system where poultry farmers have the right information, at the right moment, in the right hands.
And what excites us the most is that we are beginning this journey by shifting mindset, helping farmers see poultry not just as farming, but as agribusiness. Decisions, margins, risks, opportunities, all brought to life through simple, gamified, AI-powered nudges that make learning intuitive and practical. The technology comes last, but it quietly unlocks the confidence to think and act like entrepreneurs.
